George D. Kuh
George D. Kuh is Chancellor’s Professor of Higher Education at Indiana University Bloomington. He directs IU’s Center for Postsecondary Research, home to the National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE) which has been used by about 1200 colleges and universities in the U.S. and Canada. He also provides leadership for related surveys for faculty and law school students, the NSSE Institute for Effective Educational Practice, and the College Student Experiences Questionnaire Assessment Program. During his 30 years at Indiana University, he served as chairperson of the Department of Educational Leadership and Policy Studies, Associate Dean for Academic Affairs in the School of Education, and Associate Dean of the Faculties for the Bloomington campus. George received a B.A. from Luther College, master’s degree from St. Cloud State University, and Ph.D. from the University of Iowa. He has published about 300 items and made several hundred presentations on topics related to assessment, institutional improvement, and campus cultures. In addition, he has consulted with about 200 institutions of higher education and educational agencies in the United States and abroad. Past-president of Association for the Study of Higher Education (ASHE), he serves on the editorial boards of Change and Liberal Education and several other periodicals as well as the National Leadership Council for the Association for American Colleges and Universities’ ten-year “Liberal Education and America’s Promise” initiative. In addition, he is member of the Luther College Board of Regents and chairs it student learning and campus life committee. A past president of the Association for the Study of Higher Education (ASHE), Kuh was honored with the association's prestigious Research Achievement Award. His work has also been recognized with numerous other awards including the Indiana University’s prestigious Tracy Sonneborn Award for a distinguished record of scholarship and teaching.
Job Responsibilities
Overall leadership, policy development, and external relations for the Center for Postsecondary Research and projects related to the Law School Survey of Student Engagement (LSSSE), the College Student Experiences Questionnaire Assessment Program, the Strategic National Arts Alumni Project (SNAAP), and NSSE Institute for Effective Educational Practice.
